Clinical information

Molecular biological methods such as real-time PCR for the detection of specific nucleic acid sequences are well established in routine diagnostics. They have a wide range of applications in both infection diagnostics and the detection of genetic diseases. In acute infections, direct detection of pathogens based on their DNA or RNA rapidly provides accurate results – the best prerequisite for early and targeted therapy. At the same time, real-time PCR can be used to identify diseases associated with known gene mutations. The detection of genetic markers can provide useful information about an individual’s risk of disease or the severity of a disease.

The high-quality real-time PCR assays consistently achieve good results in quality assessment schemes. They provide a high degree of diagnostic certainty and also allow quantitative evaluation.

DNA and/or RNA extraction can be performed manually or automatically. For the automated method, a universal cartridge is available that allows simultaneous DNA or RNA extraction from different materials. The standardised workflow and the identical requirements for reaction conditions allow PCR test kits from the same pathogen class or from different diagnostic areas to be combined in the same run according to the user’s needs. The real-time PCR assays are validated for a range of thermal cyclers.

Standardised work steps, ready-to-use components and the use of uracil DNA glycosylase (UNG) to prevent contamination make the real-time PCR assays easy to use.
